Factors

 

Factors are numbers which divide EVENLY (ie no remainder)

 

 

 

eg.        1          is a factor of      6

            2          is a factor of      6

            3          is a factor of      6

            6          is a factor of      6

 

so         factors of 6 = 1, 2, 3, 6

            factors of 20 = 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20

 

HCF (Highest Common Factor)

 

·         List the factors of both numbers

·         Find the highest that appears in both lots

 

eg.        Find HCF of 24 & 20

 

24               1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

20               1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20

so HCF is 4
