Another word for “power”

 

The little number is the index, or power, and it tells you how many times to multiply the big number by itself

When the same number appears several times in a question, several short cuts can be used

 

Multiplying

eg.  

So when the big number is the same in a multiplication question, add the indices

 

Dividing

eg.  

OR  

So when the big number is the same in a division question, subtract the indices

 

Power of a Power

eg.  

So when you have a power of a power, multiply the indices
